DEXA Scan

X-ray vision into your body composition.

Let’s learn more than the scale alone could ever tell you.

Pinnacle DEXA Scans

You probably know your weight. But most people don’t know what’s going on beneath the surface–what those pounds are actually made up of. And looks alone can’t tell us much about our bone density, lean tissue, or visceral fat. That’s where the gold standard of body composition measurement steps in: the DEXA scan.

DEXA stands for Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry. It’s a safe, low-level X-ray that can differentiate between bone, fat, and lean tissue—and it can do so with much greater detail and accuracy than other body composition scans.

Because X-rays pass through different tissues at varying rates, we get a detailed image and breakdown of tissue types. It only takes minutes to do, yet it gives us an exceptionally accurate snapshot of your body’s makeup, which is highly valuable information for everyone from athletes to patients working on weight management, patients receiving hormone therapy, and more.

Our approach

Whether you’re only visiting Pinnacle for a DEXA scan or you’re an existing patient who seeks to understand their body composition better, this process is pretty simple. You’ll book your appointment, then lie on an X-ray table while a scanning arm moves over the body.

We’ll then walk through the results and insights with you. What do the numbers mean? What’s normal? How does all this square against your health needs and goals? Whether you’re hoping to stave off age-related bone density issues or want to podium in your next triathlon, these insights will do you good. And it’s something we can re-measure and compare in the future to track your progress.

How the DEXA scan informs us now—and gives us a comparison later.

Here at Pinnacle, we’re pretty big on gathering insights and putting them to use holistically for your health. A DEXA scan is just one more amazing tool in our toolkit, with several applications including:

Performance optimization for athletes:

The scan gives us a valuable snapshot of your muscle mass and distribution, which we can track against future scans to monitor changes aimed at boosting performance in your sport. We can identify areas for improvement and plan to prevent injuries, and we can also help guide training and nutrition adjustments to increase muscle mass in targeted areas.

Targeted weight loss and fat reduction:

Get detailed data on the balance of fat and muscle in your body. The scan will help us differentiate between fat loss and muscle loss—a crucial insight if you’re interested in losing weight while increasing overall strength and fitness. These insights will help us support a healthy metabolism throughout your journey. They’ll guide the strategies we use to reduce fat while preserving lean muscle mass.

Welcome to feeling better.

How Pinnacle works — without getting insurance involved.

We use a direct-care model that avoids the hassle and restriction of insurance, which means we can see patients as often as they need, take more time with them, and offer more thorough care. While we leave insurance out of the patient-doctor relationship, insurance still may cover your medications, or we may be able to connect you with coupons that keep the cost of medication to a minimum.
