Cancer Screening

Knowledge is power—and prevention.

Screenings are widespread for a few cancer types, but we aim higher and test for 50 of them.

Pinnacle Cancer Screening

We all know someone who’s battled cancer. It may run in your family—and whether or not it does, adults over 50 are 13 times more likely to have cancer than younger adults. Meanwhile, screenings like mammograms and colonoscopies, while helpful, only check for a handful of the many common types of cancer.

We say this not to scare you, but to empower you. Because more comprehensive screenings exist, and they can give you a much earlier jump-start in treating things before they get so severe that you’re experiencing symptoms. With one blood draw, we can check for signs of a wide array of cancer types, ranging from lung cancer to kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer, bone cancer, and dozens of others.

By gathering this crucial information well before seeing symptoms that would typically send you to the doctor, you can stay ahead of the curve and treat any issues aggressively and early.

Our approach

You’ll receive an in-home test kit mailed right to you. Once your sample has been processed and results are in, we’ll hop on the phone to talk through it. As needed, we’ll make a game plan together that may include:

  • Further testing, such as scans and biopsies, to confirm or eliminate concerns and flags
  • Ongoing preventative measures like healthy diet, weight, exercise, and habits to minimize the likelihood of cancer in the future

How the screening works—and why it helps.

We believe in putting the best of science to use. While standard screenings like colonoscopies and mammograms are very important, it’s a boon to have a single test that can quickly check for signs of a wide array of cancers. The test we use, the Galleri test by GRAIL, uses “liquid biopsy” technology to check your blood for DNA fragments that signal a cancer may be present so we can further analyze those signals to determine what’s going on.

A note about accuracy, false negatives, and false positives

Minimizing your cancer risk by living a healthy,
fulfilling lifestyle.

While this technology is incredible, nothing is perfect—it’s possible that the test will miss a cancer. It’s still important to do all your normal screenings in addition to this test, and we recommend re-testing yearly.
Meanwhile, false positives aren’t likely, but they are certainly possible. The test could detect an abnormal fragment of DNA that it flags as cancer, but it’s not actually cancer. When you undergo further evaluation, such as imaging, biopsies, or blood work, it may turn out that there wasn’t any cancer. It also might be the case that you do have cancer, but imaging technology isn’t advanced enough to detect it—in which case, you’d receive a free follow-up test in three months to check again.

Of course, if you do have a false positive, the news would come as a relief, but it can be a stressful time between getting your results and getting the follow-up confirmation done.

Cancer risk increases for everyone as they age, regardless of family history. In fact, only 5-10% of cancers are inherited. Not only can you get regular screenings as well as more sweeping tests like Galleri, but you can also do a lot to manage your own personal risk of developing cancer in the first place with a few good lifestyle choices. We think everything below is an excellent idea regardless—there’s no downside to a higher quality of life.

  • Maintain a healthy weight.

High levels of total body fat and high total body weight are important risk factors for certain types of cancer development. Don’t worry, this is something we can help with. If you need weight management help, it’s a service we offer with lots of built-in support, follow-through, and attainable steps.

  • Eat your fruits and veggies.

Your mom was right about that apple a day. The higher our dietary fiber intake, the healthier your gut and lower risk of colon cancer.

  • Exercise regularly.

The positive impact of exercise goes far beyond helping you maintain a healthy weight. Regular physical activity is itself an important preventative measure for cancer.

  • Wear sunscreen.

A sun-kissed glow is all well and good, but make sure you’re protecting your skin with a high quality SPF. Melanoma is no joke, and one of the first places it metastasizes to is the brain. We can help with physician-grade sunscreen
recommendations.

Welcome to feeling better.

How Pinnacle works — without getting insurance involved.

We use a direct-care model that avoids the hassle and restriction of insurance, which means we can see patients as often as they need, take more time with them, and offer more thorough care. While we leave insurance out of the patient-doctor relationship, insurance still may cover your medications, or we may be able to connect you with coupons that keep the cost of medication to a minimum.
